FAQ
The Honor Council will hear all possible violations of the Honor Code and academic integrity including plagiarism, inappropriate collaboration, and improper use of sources. The Administrative Board will continue to review all undergraduate records, hear petitions for exceptions, and handle disciplinary cases that do not involve academic dishonesty. In either case – suspected violation of the Honor Code, or disciplinary issue in class – please contact OASIC at (617) 384-7239, honorcouncil@fas.harvard.edu, or adboard@fas.harvard.edu
It is a great idea to start your semester with a discussion of what academic integrity means in your field. Is it about proper citation of sources, data integrity, collaboration, plagiarism? What are the benefits to engaging deeply and personally with their work? What kinds of challenges will students in your field face – a large volume of work, challenges synthesizing and presenting large amount of information, difficulty understanding the difference between a study group and group submission of assignments? Simply asking students to think about how their work will benefit from being done with integrity, and where they might be challenged will help them to understand the goal of the Honor Code. Another good time to talk about the issue is at the beginning of a large project – the submission of a paper proposal for instance, or preparation of data for analysis. For more information on assignment specifics, please see Teaching with Integrity – Some Resources for your Classroom. And do not hesitate to contact Lisa Laskin, Assistant Dean in the Office of Undergraduate Education (elaskin@fas.harvard.edu) for more guidance.
